Home    How to Enjoy Retirement

Retirement can be a difficult time for some people. It’s a new chapter of life, which means a lot of change. Think of it as a time to try something new, as a time to progress and improve in ways you haven’t been able to before. Here are some tips for how to enjoy retirement!

Prepare

If you still have a little bit of time before you retire, do your best to prepare. Try and set yourself up financially. Now, you don’t have to have a million dollars in the bank, but you do want as much as possible. If you have to take a huge “pay cut” once you retire, it can make it more difficult to settle into the new way of life. Money may not buy happiness, but not having enough to cover you needs can make life a little strained. If possible, have enough to cover your basic living needs with a little left over for fun.

You’re also going to need to prepare mentally and emotionally. If you’re one who loves work or loves what you do each day, be ready for that to change. Instead of dreading it or closing your eyes and hoping the day never comes, realize that it’s going to and then do what you can now to prepare for it. Maybe decide what you can do instead that will be just as enjoyable or fulfilling as your job.

Learn how to play

Again, if you’re a workaholic, retirement could be difficult. You need to learn how to play again. Success and progression will no longer come from your work. Instead it will be in whatever hobbies or skills you decide to learn.

Be OK with relaxing and just simply enjoying life. You don’t have to have this fancy retirement where you travel to a new country every month, but you also don’t have to have a retirement where you do crossword puzzles and bingo all day. It’s YOUR retirement, make it what you want!

Focus on what you CAN control

Instead of focusing on things that are out of your control, you can only enjoy retirement if you focus on those things that you can control! Decide how you’re going to live your life.

Social

Having a social life is important. You don’t want to be an old hermit once you retire. Get out in the community. Make friends. Volunteer. Find different ways to meet and talk to new people!

Exercise

Exercise is beneficial for anybody and everybody. Not only is it important for your physical and mental well-being, but it can keep your body strong and healthy as it starts to age. Exercise can also be a social aspect if you decide to be a part of exercise classes or sports teams.

Hobbies

Find something you want to learn or get better at. This can give you a sense of purpose and can keep your brain active. What’s something you’ve always been fascinated by or always wanted to learn? Retirement is the perfect time to pick it up!
